What is Tire Aging? How To Tell Your Tires Age?

DETAILS:

Just like with us as human beings, age can also have a big impact on tires. Even by just sitting in a garage, tires can and will degrade over time. The best-case scenario will be just a slight inconvenience, worst-case scenario, could be a potentially fatal crash or some other kind of accident. The reason for the aging actually comes from a chemical reaction that happens within the tire rubber itself. The NHTSA suggests that tires do age faster in warmer climates and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Thankfully, if you drive your car every single day, you’ll more than likely need to replace your tires before tire aging even becomes an issue for you. A few instances of vehicles or tires that may suffer from tire aging and degradation are collector cars that aren’t often moved or driven or spare tires that are stored in vehicle trunks or underneath the car.

To determine the age of a tire, you can take a look at your tire’s sidewall. Look for the letters “DOT” and the last 4 numbers in the sequence that follows. In the example below, you’ll see DOT CXNH PWX0320.

Nitto INVO DOT age N4SM

As a consumer, you can disregard the CXNH and the PWX as that’s just the manufacturer’s factory and tire codes but the numbers you want to focus on are the 0320. This means that this tire was made in the 3rd week of the year 2020. The first two digits are always the week of the year the tire is made, and the last two digits represent the year the tire was made. яндекс

Some manufacturers recommend that you replace your tires every 6 years. This does vary based on the use case. Race cars and performance vehicles should be replaced more frequently than that, off-roading vehicles as well. Daily driven commuter vehicles have a little bit more flexibility there. Remember to always refer to your owner’s manual for specific information about your vehicle.
